Please be advised that due to the impacts of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) the Swamp Trail at Theodore Roosevelt Island is closed. The closure, which is estimated to last approximately 120 days was put in place to ensure the safety of visitors to Theodore Roosevelt Island. We'll keep you updated as more information is available.
NPS is offering a Juneteenth program THIS SUNDAY, June 11, at the Island. Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865 abolition of slavery. Events run from 11 AM - 2PM, and include period re-enactors, a tour of the Island focusing on its civil war history, and Junior Ranger activities.
On Saturday, November 19, NPS and FoTRI will be on the Island to discuss the Cultural Landscape Report the Park Service is working on for Theodore Roosevelt Island. We'll be on the island from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. to answer questions and talk more about this exciting project. Bonus tip for FoTRI enthusiats: We suspect that there may be some NPS 100th Anniversary Swag to give away!
Consistent with its mission to promote public awareness of Theodore Roosevelt Island, The Friends of Theodore Roosevelt Island (FOTRI) is opening the island to digital visitors as well! Using a special camera generously loaned to us by Google, FOTRI spent hours taking and uploading 360° photographs from along the Woods Trail, Swamp Trail, and connecting trails. The nearly 300 images are now available on Google Maps and have already been viewed over 4,000 times in less than two weeks. We purposefully left plenty of the island unexplored to encourage visitors to come out and enjoy the island’s miles of trails in person.
Have a group that would benefit from a private tour or activity on the Island? We can help.
